July 2012 Garden Update

Here is our garden on Sunday afternoon, July 22.

Here is the garden in mid-June.

I love how the garden explodes in just a few weeks.  We’ve harvested lots of eggplant and chiles.  But now we are getting summer squash and zucchini.

We bought two varieties of beans (pole and bush) and they are both purple.  They turn green when you cook them.

We are also getting cucumbers.  They are so chubby and spiky- I hope they taste good.

I have to admit that one of our tomato boxes is struggling with the heat.  The smaller box of tomatoes looks great, but the big box is leggy and yellowing.  But the plants have lots of green tomatoes, so maybe they are just struggling to reproduce.

We planted sunflowers throughout the boxes.  They are so tall they resemble little trees.  I believe they are Mammoth Greys.

We’ve never had squash bugs before, but I think they are making a home in one of our boxes.  Any tips for discouraging them?  We prefer organic means of taking care of them.

The kids particularly like the herbs.  My girls will eat the purple basil by the handful when they are outside!

Thanks for joining me for my latest garden update.
