Spring Gardening: Part I
Thanks to Hooked on Houses for hosting Hooked on Fridays blog party.
In the Southwest, spring comes early and generally the ground ceases to freeze by April, but March in warm years. We’ve had such a warm winter, we decided to plant strawberry plants and seeds this past week. And then we listened to the weather and found out we were supposed to get snow at the end of the week. Ha, ha Mother Nature! Seriously, how does it go from nearly 80 degrees to snow in one week??

Strawberry plants and poppy, zinnia, and cosmo seeds.
We planted everything in pots. Earlier in March we had planted a lettuce seed called “salad mix”. You can see it is sprouting nicely.

We used Botanical Interests lettuce seeds.
Every day, Miss Petrie asks, “Where are the strawberries?”

Six strawberry plants were $3.99 at locally owned Osuna Nursery.
We’re hoping to resurrect this lavender plant.

Dead or not?
We placed our plants near our front door. I feel so cheerful when I come home to my new plants.

Planting Day
So cross your fingers that we don’t get a freeze. We are really looking forward to delicious strawberries and crunchy salads all summer long!
Strawberries sound great – it’s so rewarding to grow your own fruits and vegetables, too. Have a great weekend
Good luck with your strawberries! Your little helper is adorable!
I never tried strawberries in a pot. That could be real popular at out place. Is that beer part a special fertilizer?
Terry: Haha, the beer wasn’t fertilizer. Your question made me laugh! I have heard of getting rid of certain pests by leaving out an open bottle of beer, but no, this beer was for Mr. Petrie’s enjoyment.
I like the idea of some fruit or vegis in a pot…, bu snow so late in the SW!
Maya, Ugh, I know. The snow was supposed to happen Friday, but it doesn’t look like it will snow. I’m hoping the weather doesn’t get worse.
There are few ways to better welcome Spring than planting strawberries and fresh plants. Thank you for sharing these wonderful photographs! ~Arleen
I just planted my salad greens today (in a container I will take it inside overnights since it’s still cold here). Yea for strawberries! Mine from last year are greening up.
We grew strawberries last year, but the local wildlife enjoyed them more than we did. We’re going to try to use some sort of netting to protect them better this year!
Got my fingers crossed for you that it doesn’t snow!
Oh yum!

April and May are the perfect months to plant! I am going to plant my annual herb garden soon. Last year I had two beautiful basil plants! They were huge! I was so proud of them and they produced so much that I couldn’t give it all away!!! This year I will add cilantro; something that I always want to plant, but when I plant, it’s still too cold. Good luck with the berries Miss Petrie
You’ll have to share!!!
