A Candy Science Experiment or Preempting Cavities
We had a boatload of candy left over from Halloween and some of the candy was the type that really sticks to teeth. Miss Petrie is our little cavity girl and we needed to get rid of the candy. I’d heard of people paying their kids for candy, but she was not receptive to this idea. Then I read about a family who created a candy collage with smashed up candy. I thought we could use all of our super sticky candy up if we heated up a pan of candy in the oven.
First we started by choosing all the sticky candy from Miss Petrie’s stash. She was amazingly happy to choose the cavity offenders and unwrap the candy.

Then we let the candy concoction heat in the oven at 250 degrees for about 2 hours. I used a low heat because I didn’t want the candy to burn and make the house stink like burned Tootsie Rolls!

After the candy cooled and hardened, we took it out of the pan and examined it. I asked Miss Petrie to try and identify the different colors and textures. She really enjoyed touching the candy brick to identify different candy we had thrown into the mixture.
We have let the candy cool overnight in the fridge and I will put it into a big Ziplock and let Miss Petrie at it with a hammer. Then we can identify some of the innards of the candy block.
I plan to do something similar next time we have a lot of candy in the house.
Have a great Monday.
That’s a pretty cool idea. I should do that with the boys.
