A Felt Valentine’s Day Banner

February11

Thanks to the DIY Show Off for hosting this fun linky party:

I love sewing with felt.  I made this banner for my little girl’s bed for Valentine’s Day 2009.  The sewing took me some time to finish, but the result is bright and cheery for an often cold and dreary month.

From my heart to yours

I embroidered this heart with her initial and another heart. I love the pink, red, turquoise and yellow combination.

Each heart took me about thirty minutes to sew. I like the imperfection of the hearts.

Have a wonderful day!

Additional Storage for Baby

September27

Thanks to Between Naps On The Porch for hosting Metamorphosis Monday.

With the arrival of Baby Girl Petrie this winter, we really needed to figure out additional storage in Miss Petrie’s room for all the incoming baby things.  Our girls will be sharing a room eventually, but for now, the room needs to hold baby stuff and kiddo stuff.  Miss Petrie’s room had her playhouse in a corner, but it took up a lot of space.  I’d been looking for bookshelves for a while and these tall espresso shelves from Target fit the bill.

Before:

(If you want to see all the room’s before pics, click here.)

Here’s the room now.

These shelves replaced the playhouse.  The shelves house baby clothes, books, and toys.

I labeled each bin with sizes so I could easily put away baby clothes.

The new furniture set-up allows lots of space for playing on the carpet.

Keep tuned in for nesting.  We sure are doing plenty of it now!

Have a great day.

Bookshelf Update

August28

Last week’s Sunday paper had a tall bookshelf in espresso for $26 (at Target)!  You may remember I’ve been looking for shelves.  Well, I picked up two shelves for Miss Petrie’s room.  The shelves are now back up to $32, but I still think that’s a deal.  We haven’t even got them out of the car, but I’ll take pictures when we set them up.  I’m looking forward to having more storage space in Miss Petrie’s room.

Looking for Bookshelves

July15

I’m looking for bookshelves for Miss Petrie’s room.  I want the shelves to match with the other shelves we have in the house.  I would buy the same shelves, but they do not not make them any longer.  Which is such a bummer, because those shelves were inexpensive and pretty.

From Target:

From Overstock:

From Ikea:

I’ll continue to look at thrift stores for shelves that are in good condition or shelves that have good bones.  Wish me luck!

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Barrette Storage

June9

If you have a little girl, you know how many bows and barrettes they can accumulate.  I had all of Miss Petrie’s shoved onto one brave ribbon.

I found a nice piece of white cardboard in the garage.  I used the magical glue gun to adhere ribbon to the cardboard.

Looks like a lot of space, right?  That’s what I thought, but I may have to make another soon…

I twisted ribbon to create a loop so I can hang the barrette storage in Miss Petrie’s closet.

Organization, one step at a time!  Have a great day.

Closet Organizing with a Touch of Pink

May23

Thanks to How Sweet the Sound for hosting Pink Saturday.

We have made an effort here at Casa Petrie to use our closet space well.  I read lots of small home (usually small is considered under 2,000 square feet) books to get storage and organization ideas.  These books point out two important points about closets: 1) if you add a second bar to your closet, you double your closet real estate, and 2) use that darn vertical space!!  Well, we could do that without going into debt for California Closets.

This is our coat closet.  We added wire organizers to increase our kitchen storage.

One night a crash woke us.  Our master bedroom closet had one very long and much-abused bar holding up all of our clothes.  The bar cracked in half and we decided to re-do the closet.

We added a second bar and the top of the closet is used for out-of-season shoes and hats.

In Miss Petrie’s room, we decided to forego a dresser and store her folded clothes in pink wire cubbies from Target.  I also use a combination of clear boxes and baskets to help organize her toys and accesories.

Left side (this is how a closet looks when a 3 year old gets to pick her own clothes):

At the top of her closet, I’ve used containers to corral an assortment of stuff we need for specific occasions, but not daily.  The very top of the closet has blankets.  They go right up to the ceiling.

On the back of Miss Petrie’s door, I use a shoe organizer for her shoes.  I don’t think shoe organizers are so great for most adults because they don’t store many pairs of shoes, but for a child, it’s the perfect size since you can usually store one pair in one pocket.

I feel much happier knowing we use the space available to us as effectively as we can.  Have a great weekend and enjoy all the other Pink Saturday posts!

A Pinkalicious Child’s Room

April24

Thanks to How Sweet the Sound for hosting Pink Saturday.

Don’t forget to sign up for our Casa Petrie giveaway for some fun house and crafty stuff!

Little Miss Petrie’s nursery was yellow with sparse white and crimson accents.  But when we moved her to her big girl room, we had to agree that she would love a pink room. We have lots of chocolate brown throughout our house, so I used this color to ground her room.  Enjoy the tour of the most pinkalicious room in our home. ;)

A Dash of Color Thanks to New Pillows

April7

I went by Pier 1 the other day on the way to the post office to check out the ubiquitous bunny on a stick.  We browsed around and mostly checked out the clearance.  I’m a very strict clearance shopper and like new merchandise to be at least 75% off.  I hit the jackpot with new pillows to add a pop of color in Miss Petrie’s room.

Original price: $22. I paid $1.50! That's over 90% off.

The pillows had a few of the shell beads missing, but they still look awesome.

You may have noticed the chocolate brown tree mural behind the chair.  I painted them to help ground the room.  Pink can be a bit saccharine without a neutral to balance it.  I also wanted Miss Petrie’s room to continue with some of the colors we have throughout the rest of the house.

I will post a tour of Miss Petrie’s room in the near future.
